The Silent Take

Posted on | November 2, 2011 | 1 Comment

This afternoon I wanted to make a vlog to share what’s going on with me.

After a few false starts, I just took out all the words.

This is a hat tip to Terrence Malick, who always shoots a final, silent take of each scene in his movies.

Drive: The Longest Post Ever

Posted on | October 3, 2011 | No Comments

Hey internet. It’s been a while.

Allow me to make it up to you with quite possibly my longest ‘Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About…’ Film post ever for the not-quite-so-recently-released movie, Drive.

For those who don’t know, Drive is a movie starring Ryan Gosling as the unnamed lead who stunt drives by day and moonlights as a getaway driver by night. His solitary existence changes when he falls in love with Irene (played by Carey Mulligan).  Matters complicate once her husband returns from prison shortly after their introduction. I would best describe this neo-noir heist-gone-wrong film as a superhero movie for the indie-lectual set. Here’s the trailer:

Before we begin, I just want to warn you that this is post seriously long, guys. I drafted it in MS word and it ran 7 pages. Needless to say, it is full of spoilers so I highly suggest you watch it first before getting your cinematic trivia on.

On Freedom, by Jonathan Franzen

Posted on | September 13, 2011 | No Comments

I read Freedom – all 576 pages of it – in just a day and a half. The experience was akin to dining on an exquisite steak: grass-fed, medium-rare, cuts as easy as butter. I tried to eat it slowly and savor every bite, but found myself entranced and simply unable to stop.  And now, I can only pass on desserts and digestifs as a way to let the novel linger.  I don’t yet want to cleanse the taste of this entree from my literary palate.

That’s all I want to say, really.

Turns

This is my good friend, Davi.

It’s hard to imagine that we have known each other less than 6 months. In that time we have had awkward coffee exchanges, shared our doubts, fears, amibitions, found ourselves reading the same books, and watched many a game of handball.

In this time, we have even had two proper fights. Or maybe I should say – with great reluctance – only one. I admit the second and most recent was more of Don Quixote endeavor and he played a very gracious windmill.

Most importantly, however, we fulfilled the initial mission the bound us together: we made art.

The fruits of our – and infinitely more his – labor are getting their due this month starting this Thursday, September 15th.

And the internet – who me? yes you! don’t be a stranger! – is invited!
